PhD position: AI- and satellite-based weather forecasting (TU Delft and BFH)

We offer a PhD position at the interface of AI, weather forecasting and sustainable energy. Join our interdisciplinary research team in energy meteorology and AI-based weather forecasting.

​

We are looking for a doctoral researcher interested in machine learning, weather forecasting and energy meteorology. Desired start date is spring 2026. The PhD position is a 4-year full-time position and fully funded with a salary of approximately 51'000 CHF or 56'000 EUR per year. The PhD student will be embedded at BFH and the Department of Geoscience and Remote Sensing at TU Delft from which the student is expected to receive their PhD degree.

 

Your profile:

  • MSc degree (or equivalent) in computer science, data science, machine learning, physics, atmospheric or geoscience, engineering, applied mathematics, or a related field

  • First experience in at least one of machine learning, deep learning frameworks, statistics, image processing, signal analysis

  • Interest in atmospheric modelling and remote sensing

  • Strong programming skills incl. Python; analytical and quantitative skills, data analysis, scientific modelling and interpretation skills

  • You are self-motivated, proactive, and enjoy working with complex topics

  • You are committed to your project, enjoy collaborations and are a good team player

  • Good communication, writing and presentation skills will be advantageous

Your responsibilities:

  • Conduct research on topics related to this project

  • Publish your results in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences

  • Organize project activities, engage in project meetings, report project work and results

  • Opportunity to assist in teaching and co-supervising of undergraduate students

 

You will be embedded in the Energy Weather and AI Lab at TU Delft and BFH. Our research contributes to advancing the transition to low-carbon energy systems.
